NMSU’s College of Engineering unveiled a 4,000‑pound Cummins diesel engine donated by Cummins Inc., celebrating the gift during National Engineers Week. The engine will become a major hands‑on teaching tool for students, especially in Engineering Technology and Surveying Engineering, thanks to a partnership led by Prof. Samah Ben Ayed.
The event brought together students, faculty, college leadership, and industry partners to highlight the value of experiential learning and industry collaboration. Cummins executive Robert Rivas emphasized the importance of education in preparing the next generation of engineers, while Interim Dean David Jauregui noted that the engine will enhance laboratory instruction across the college for years to come.
Capstone students working on an engine enclosure shared their project experience, underscoring how the equipment will support learning in engine diagnostics, efficiency, emissions systems, and performance analysis. A new micro‑credential course on engines is also planned.

The celebration was part of NMSU’s broader E‑Week activities, which included resume reviews, an AI-in-industry lecture, student organization talks, and a Lego competition during “Cummins Day.” E‑Week concludes with the 50th annual Bromilow Lecture by alumnus James Owen on Feb. 27 in Jett Hall.
